Addict caught by police supplying drugs in Norfolk street

Jason Weston, 52,  who is known to police was seen by officers approaching an address in St Georges Road, Great Yarmouth and knocking on a window before taking something.

Norwich Crown Court heard Weston was then seen by police to make an exchange to a known drug user in Nelson Road Central in the town.

Norwich Crown Court (Image: Peter Walsh, Newsquest)Chris Youell, prosecuting, said Weston, who has been addicted to drugs for "30 years", was found to have six wraps of cocaine on him as well as a mobile phone.

He said Weston, himself a heroin addict, had been involved in supplying small amounts of drugs to people he knew either by name or nickname.

Weston, from Albert Square, Yarmouth, appeared at court on Wednesday after admitting one offence of possession with intent to supply cocaine on April 20 last year.

Judge Katharine Moore said: "Those who are trafficking class A drugs can expect this court to send them into custody".

Judge Katharine Moore (Image: Newsquest)But she acknowledged the case of Weston, who has had a "long-standing drug addiction", was different in that his role was limited and he was now taking steps to tackle his drug addiction.

Judge Moore imposed an 18 month sentence, suspended for 21 months.

Nicola May, mitigating, said Weston was passing on drugs to people "well known" to him who are also drug addicts.

She said he has had a "long-standing habit" but has now managed to stop injecting drugs as he now wants to have a more meaningful relationship with his mother, following the death of his father, and his child.

Weston was also ordered to undertake 30 days Rehabilitation Activity Requirement (RAR) as well as a nine-month drug rehabilitation requirement.
