More than 1,100 cars were stopped by police in Norfolk as part of a month-long operation. 

A total of 1,158 roadside tests were carried out across the county from December 1 to January 1 to remind motorists there is no excuse for drink or drug driving.

Of those tests, 71 people were arrested following a positive breath test, 40 were arrested following a positive drug wipe and an additional 12 were arrested for driving under the influence of either.

Of all the people who failed a test, 77pc were men - compared to 76pc last year - and 15pc were under the age of 25 - compared to 33pc in 2022.

It came as part of a national social media campaign with the tagline "#NoExcuse" which was organised by the National Police Chiefs' Council.

Chief Inspector Vicky McParland, of the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Roads and Armed Policing Team, said: "Nearly 250 people were arrested for drink and drug driving across East Anglia throughout the campaign which is an average of eight people a day. 

"Although the campaign allowed us to highlight the dangers of drink and drug driving to the public, it is something we enforce every day of the year and we will continue to work to remove dangerous drivers from Norfolk and Suffolk's roads."
