A city centre ice cream kiosk that has served generations will be handed a new permanent home - just in time for summer.

Giuseppino Ices in Hay Hill will see its "temporary" pink and white kiosk replaced with a larger timber-clad building.

The stall was initially left in an awkward position when it was partly fenced in after work started on the £3.2m revamp of the city square in April last year.

Council workers later moved the structure to its current location on the corner of the hill.

The ice cream stall, which has served customers in the city for years, continued to open for business despite the surrounding chaos as concrete was dug up.

A planning statement submitted to the city council said: “The use of a kiosk on Hay Hill is well established and was referenced as something that users of Hay Hill valued as an independent offer within the city.

“As such, it was decided by the design team for Hay Hill, following discussions with the current operator, that the kiosk should be an integral design feature of the redesigned public open space, coordinating with the rest of the design.

“The existing kiosk is smaller than practically required by the operator, it isn’t economically viable to refurbish, and has a style quite distinct from the other market stalls in the city centre.

“The size of the proposed kiosk has been informed by the scale of the stalls at the Norwich market and by the needs of the current ice cream kiosk tenant, who will be the first occupier of the unit.”

The plans for the stall have now been approved.

Having secured £3.2m in government funding in late 2020, the city council's transformation of Hay Hill will include more planting, improved seating, better-designed steps, walking links and a water feature, creating a space able to host public events.

It is due to be completed this spring.
