A new cafe - boasting a tattoo studio and barbers - will open on the site of a former dessert restaurant.

Jackson Harmer, of Creative Vault Ltd, based in Martham, applied to Great Yarmouth Borough Council to change of use of 156 High Street in Gorleston - the former Belly Boos cafe which closed down in 2022.

Planners approved his bid to reopen the premises as a mixed use business including a barbers, cafe and tattoo studio.

Plans show the cafe and barbers will be in two separate rooms at the front of the premises while the tattoo studio will be in a room behind the cafe.

In a nod to the building's former life as a bank, the new business will be called 'The Vault'.

It will employ 15 people.

Planners said the proposal was acceptable and would retain an active ground floor frontage on Gorleston High Street.

One neighbour had objected to the plans, raising concerns over staff taking food through the tattoo area - but environmental services were consulted and raised no objection.

When Belly Boos closed, in November 2022, its owners said their decision had followed an increase in business rates at the premises.

The opening hours for the new cafe are 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 9pm on Saturday and closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

The tattoo studio will open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on Saturday and appointment only on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

The council has also approved an application to convert the building's first and second floors into a house of multiple occupation (HMO).

The plans include six bedrooms with shared kitchen, living areas and bathroom.

Barbara Wright, borough councillor, had raised concerns about the size of the rooms.

She also said the proposal could "detrimentally change" the High Street if other property owners submitted similar applications.
