A man living with his horse on a playing field in one of Norfolk's most upmarket villages is set to be turfed off.

The man pitched up with his animal on the playing field at Brancaster before Christmas.

He was earlier evicted from another nearby piece of land in the village, where house prices average £560,000 and around half of properties are second homes or holiday lets.

Now Brancaster Parish Council, which owns the playing field off the main A149 coast road, has agreed to send a “sympathetic” legal letter giving him notice to quit.

Parish council chairman Tom de Winton said: "This guy and his horse have been living in Brancaster since the summer illegally on Freebridge land.

"He and his horse have now turned up on our playing field and steps are being taken to have him removed."

Mr de Winton said he had offered the man a piece of land he owns to camp on temporarily over Christmas but the man declined and continued "squatting" on the playing field.

The man has set up camp with a green fishing tent and pallets in a corner of the field near the car park, with a gas barbecue to cook on.

The spot is next to an electricity sub-station serving nearby properties, with a sticker warning "danger of death".

The man, whose tidy encampment also boasts a black wheelie bin, was not at home when the EDP called to get his side of the story.

His horse was grazing contentedly nearby, tethered to a stake hammered into the ground, after snow showers passed over the coast.

A horse drawn trap parked in a corner of the car park near the children's play area is up for sale for £400.
