Even more of Norfolk's countryside could have 50-metre-high pylons built on it after energy bosses unveiled plans for another new overhead electricity line.

Communities in west Norfolk are now facing the prospect of new structures in their region, at a time when campaigners in south Norfolk have criticised proposals for pylons in that part of the county.

National Grid has started consultation over proposals for 87 miles of network to transport electricity from offshore windfarms - with part of the new line in west Norfolk.

The Grimsby to Walpole network, which would transport six gigawatts of power, would stretch from the Lincolnshire town to the west Norfolk parish of Walpole, which includes the villages of Walpole St Peter, Walpole St Andrew and Walpole Marsh.

The project forms part of The Great Grid Upgrade, which National Grid says is the largest overhaul in generations.

Ben Muncey, project director for Grimsby to Walpole, said: "This reinforcement between Grimsby and Walpole is essential in the UK’s journey to net zero by 2050 and is part of a wider programme to upgrade the entire network.

"We look forward to hearing views from members of the public and we welcome feedback on our proposals."

The proposals have sparked controversy in Lincolnshire, which the majority of the project would pass through.

Councillors there have called for the cables to be buried under the ground or to go under the sea.

That criticism is similar to that levelled at energy bosses in another part of Norfolk where pylons are proposed.

National Grid has met opposition to its plans for a 112-mile line of pylons stretching from Dunston, near Norwich, to Tilbury on the Thames estuary.

Critics, including MPs, councils and campaign groups, said the pylons would ruin the landscape and have called for cables to go offshore.
