A Norfolk woman who rubbed shoulders with the late Queen has been named in the King's New Year Honours list.
Susan Yvonne Browne, who goes by Yvonne, has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to the Women’s Institute (WI) and to the community in Sandringham, near King’s Lynn.
No stranger to appearing in the headlines, she has often been pictured with the late Queen Elizabeth who joined the national organisation in 1943.
Its WI meetings are held in a village hall in West Newton on the Sandringham Estate.
And the Queen became president of the Sandringham and West Newton WI branch in 2003, following in the footsteps of the Queen Mother.
Mrs Browne, who is aged in her early 70s, said: “I think when she came here she treasured the memories she made here with the people.”
Mother-of-three Mrs Browne, is a former administrative assistant at Park House Hotel on the Sandringham Estate.
Also in the King’s New Year’s Honours, David Martin James Ball, of King’s Lynn, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to the community in East Anglia.
Do you know someone who deserves an honour?
As we celebrate those extraordinary people across Norfolk who have received honours from The King in the New Year’s Honours List, can I encourage all EDP readers to nominate individuals they know who go and above the call of duty to help others?
Our honours system in this country is designed to recognise people who make a real difference to their community or in their field of work. Often those individuals do not seek recognition but simply help others for its own reward and we need to find and celebrate these wonderful people. You can help!
Anyone can nominate a person for an honour. You will only need two letters of support to back up your nomination from people who know the nominee personally and an explanation of how to nominate is on the Norfolk Lieutenancy website (Honours for Individuals – Norfolk Lieutenancy).
The process is straightforward but if you have any questions do get in touch with the Lieutenancy office who will be delighted to help.
I want to thank and celebrate all those individuals who make Norfolk such a wonderful place to live. Thank you so much.
Philippa Dannatt - HM Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk
