County Hall has joined the growing call the government to step up and appoint a minister to support coastal communities suffering from flooding and erosion.

As more people face their homes being knocked down after their properties were left on the verge of collapsing into the sea, county councillors are urging the government to take more responsibility.

At a meeting of Norfolk County Council on Tuesday members called for the government to appoint a minister responsible for flooding and coastal communities.

It follows similar demands from a cross party group of MPs in Westminster and Henry Cator, chairman of the Norfolk Strategic Flooding Alliance.

James Bensley, Conservative county councillor for East Flegg division, which includes Hemsby, one of the worst affected areas in the county, spearheaded the call at Norfolk County Council.

Mr Bensley said coastal communities needed significant help during this “massive challenge” and local authorities “cannot do it alone”.

Fellow Conservative Eric Vardy said there have been many issues around the Norfolk coast, particularly at Hemsby, which have prompted “real concern and horror”.

The motion saw unanimous support from across the council.

Kay Mason Billig, the leader of the council, will write to all national party leaders calling for them to support a new minister.
