Plans to refurbish a town centre nightclub and create five new homes look set to get the go-ahead despite opposition.

Stephen Necker has applied to convert part of Mendi's, in Wisbech, into four two-storey properties and add a first floor flat to the building.

The club on the Old Market, which dates back to the 1970s and is currently closed, will also be given a facelift including a new frontage.

Fenland councillors have been recommended to approve the plans when they meet on Wednesday, despite objections.

They include one from the Wisbech Society, which says: "The proposed changes to the frontage of the building are considered an attempt to create a 'modern nightclub style' of building, without any consideration given to how it will impact the setting of the historic built environment that is the Old Market."

Wisbech Town Council says the proposals "constitute overdevelopment of the site".

A report to councillors says 43 objections from members of the public have been received including re-opening a nightclub in a conservation area and moving the dance floor to the front of the building.

It adds 34 representations of support have also been received, adding: "Supporters spoke about how great it was that the nightclub was reopening, how safe they felt when attending and how important the club was to the economy of Wisbech."

The report says the venue has had planning permission since 1973 to be a nightclub, restaurant and bar, which cannot be revoked.

It adds: "The proposed development will provide economic benefits to Wisbech through the provision of employment opportunities for a re-establishing business under new ownership."

It concludes the plans are considered "on balance acceptable".
