On this day, November 28, in 1897 a storm known as the “Great Rage” battered the East Coast of Norfolk.
A number of ships were destroyed and members of the crew lost their lives.
The ketch Lord Wolseley collided with the Cockle Lightship, the brig Pennine sank at Hemsby and the Vedra from Sunderland went ashore at Bacton.
The sea walls and the new beach gardens, which had opened in the summer, were destroyed at Great Yarmouth while Marine Parade, the Britannia Pier and the jetty were also damaged.
The river burst its banks flooding houses, warehouses, offices and the railway lines.
