A coastal supermarket looks set to get a bigger car park and install electric vehicle chargers despite objections.

West Norfolk councillors have been recommended to approve plans for 29 extra spaces, of which 26 would have rapid chargers at Lidl's store at Heacham, near King's Lynn.

A report to the council's planning committee says: "Due to the area being popular with tourists, the car park is often busy with caravans, campervans and holidaymakers, who can sometimes take up multiple car parking spaces."

It adds increased parking which will allow more customers to visit the store, while access from the A149 will also be improved.

Heacham Parish Council objects to the proposals. It says: "This extended design will change the car park into one where vehicles will come from all directions mixing with pedestrians including children, it is a confused layout with no clear rules and needs a one-way system in and out."

It adds there is not enough space for the articulated lorries which deliver to the store and the extension will increase car use.

Five objections and three letters of support have also been received.

The report says the "relatively small" extension will increase the number of spaces at the store to 152, while agreed parking standards say a supermarket of the same size should have 177.

It concludes: "It is likely that pressures on the car park will only increase over time as the population increases.

"It is therefore considered that it would be difficult to suggest that the proposed development is not acceptable."

The planning committee will decide the application when it meets on Monday, December 4.
