Plans to build a McDonald’s restaurant behind Fakenham's Lidl have split opinion in the town.

The fast food giant hopes to develop the 1.94 acre site behind the Holt Road supermarket, with access to its drive-through presumably to run through the Lidl car park.

But weekend shoppers at the Lidl were divided over whether the Golden Arches would be a good addition to the town.

Heather Fair, from Fakenham, said: “I am all for it. I think it is good for the town and it is very popular.

"I think it is just a good thing that they want to come here, it will bring more people to Fakenham.

Jean Anthony, who also lives in the town, said: “It will probably be a good thing, a lot of people will use it. It can’t be bad, something opening rather than shutting down.

"Plus, who can't resist a burger and chips.”

Diana Maple, from Fakenham, said: “I am fine with it, I think Fakenham really needs it because it is a bit of a dead town.

"I live nearby and it will not bother me, I do not think you’ll even smell it when it opens.”

But Valerie Lawrence said: “It is not something I would use, but my grandchildren would. I feel indifferent about it coming to the town.

"Maybe it will bring people into Fakenham. I would not oppose a McDonald’s, because it is progression for the town, but like I said, I would not personally use it.”

And David Peacock, also from Fakenham, added: “I will not go to it. We live a few miles out of town and we pick up a lot of fast food litter from people throwing them out of their cars.

"I am worried about the impact it will have in the town after it opens.”
