Almost 30 new gritters that cost £3.2m will take to Norfolk's roads this winter.

A fleet of 58 gritters treat 2,200 miles of road including all A and B-class roads in the county and some C-class roads.

£1.3m was spent on 14 new gritting vehicles which were used for the first time last winter and now 27 new gritters are joining the fleet.

It comes after crews completed their first gritting runs over the weekend as temperatures dropped to below freezing.

Cllr Graham Plant, cabinet member for highways, infrastructure and transport, said the new winter vehicles will help to keep people safe on the roads.

"Our salt domes are fully stocked, crews are ready to go, and our experienced highway team are keeping a close eye on weather sensors and detailed specialist forecasts that help inform where and when gritting will be taking place," he said.

“To help keep people moving around safely this winter, however they choose to travel, we’ll again be providing information and advice on social media with the hashtag #NorfolkWinter.”

National Highways grit the A11 and A47, with Norfolk County Council treating a number of pedestrian and main pavement areas in Norwich, Great Yarmouth and King's Lynn.

More than 2000 grit bins are available around the county for people to use on roads, pavements and cycle paths.
