Dr Clare Lidbetter, head of sixth form at Wisbech Grammar School, tells us more about the sixth form experience ahead of the open evening on Thursday, November 9.

At Wisbech Grammar School, the sixth form is a time of real opportunity. Academic learning is at the heart of everything we do, and our sixth form is about opening as many doors as possible for pupils to help them make the most of their potential.

There is a vast array of subject choices and pupils are expected to support their A-Level options by taking up the ‘Extended Project Qualification’ or following a series of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

Similarly, more pupils are demonstrating their commitment by taking Duke of Edinburgh Silver or Gold awards. In addition, pupils have the opportunity to attend a number of academic enrichment lectures held throughout the year.

With digital skills being a necessity in today’s world, our pupils prove themselves to be independent learners, taking advantage of online lectures and lessons. They are also encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning experience, and take on roles as prefects, team captains and setting examples for younger pupils across the school.

Our sixth form pupils are supported by pastoral and academic staff who encourage them to challenge themselves, pursue their passions and develop the resilience to cope with current and future demands.

Our sixth form centre has classrooms for A-Level teaching, two of which are Harkness rooms designed to promote discussion in an encouraging and open environment.

The downstairs area is also home to a careers space with a reference library and computer access. Upstairs provides the pupils with a large café-style common room and two study rooms; one is designed for collaborative study with large tables suitable for group project work and the other is for silent, independent study with individual carrels and access to computers.

While the sixth form centre enjoys a distinct identity, it remains very much part of the wider school community. This presents many avenues to take a leading role in school life and indulge their interests outside the classroom through a wide range of team sports, community initiatives, co-curricular activities and enrichment opportunities.
