Police found a drunk driver hiding in bushes after he had crashed into a ditch after a night “drowning his sorrows”.

Daniel White, 36, drove his Seat Leon off the road on Jack Chase Way in Caister-on-Sea on February 10 this year shortly after he was seen leaving The Ship pub.

Norwich Magistrates’ Court heard local people were awoken to the sound of a loud smash and an engine revving.

Paul Brown, prosecuting, said the self-employed builder was seen staggering out of the car and had tried to blame bystanders for the crash before being arrested by police and a search found him in bushes.

White, of Old Mill Road in Caister, had initially denied being more than twice the drink drive limit but admitted using threatening words.

Magistrates disqualified him from driving for 20 months and ordered he pay fines and costs totalling £1,469.

Ian Fisher, mitigating, said he had gone to the pub to “drown his sorrows” and had made the “calamitous” decision to drive.

He said a driving ban would impact on his business but that it was “entirely self-inflicted” and he was “remorseful”.
