Tribute show to Mundesley Festival's Derek Kirk raises £910

The event was in memory of Derek Kirk - the former general manager of Mundesley’s summer festival - who died aged 89 earlier this year.

More than 100 people enjoyed the show at the Coronation Hall, which was also the festival venue. 

It raised £910, which will fund permanent memorials to Mr Kirk.

Compere and comic Pat Nearney said: “Organisers are talking to Derek’s family about putting a plaque in the hall, or a bench in the village to remember him.

“The turnout and total shows how much people thought of Derek, who put so much work into the festival. It was a fitting tribute to him.”

Mr Nearney shared the stage with comedian Johnny Laff, who greeted audience members as Mrs Brown and singer Sharon Sheldon. 

The second half starred the 1960s and 70s cover band The Rewinders, whose drummer Malcolm Torbuck, and his Stage Door Entertainments partner Helen Wild were the main organisers.

Mr Torbuck thanked the performers for giving their services for free, volunteers, Pat Nearney and local photographer Paul Damen, who reprinted a book on the history of the festival which sold out and added £187 to the total.

He added: “I was asked during the night can we do it again next year. Well, yes we can. Date to be arranged. Watch this space.”

Mundesley Festival, which ran from 1985 to 2016, featured performers including Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball, The Bachelors, Brotherhood of Man and Baron Knights.

Local entertainers Keith Skipper and Olly Day have also performed there. Mr Kirk was stage manager in the early days before taking over as general manager in 2006.
