After just shy of 20 weeks, over 3000 miles cycled, including climbing the height of Everest uphill three times, an epic cycle tour of the country’s cathedrals has come to an end right here in Norfolk.
Jon and Linda Reed from Norwich completed their incredible adventure at Norwich Cathedral on the morning of October 16 - after setting out on Tilly the tandem from Ipswich on May 31. They’ve cycled 4850km to every Anglican Cathedral in England and Episcopalian Cathedral in Scotland.
With their arrival in Norwich, the couple, both in their 60s, will have visited 52 cathedrals, suffered from two punctures, a broken frame, a broken pannier rack, a split tyre, and a snapped tent pole, fallen in the Grand Union Canal and got stuck in numerous muddy tracks.
“I cannot believe we have done this, it does not feel real,” the pair said.
“You feel excited that you managed to complete such an epic challenge, but also quite sad that it's come to an end. We’re relieved to have finished, when we started, we didn’t know if we could do it.”
The duo headed out with their passport, put together by English Cathedral Association and Cycle UK, they aimed to fill the UK English Cathedral Pilgrimage route, with Chelmsford the first stop on their journey.
When the pair arrived at Norwich Cathedral, they were met by the sacrist as the final stamp was placed into their passports.
They have also updated people with every stop on their journey with their blog posts - detailing every part of their trip.
The pair will travel back to Ipswich via train, and maybe think about another adventure.
“It's highly addictive these tours, and I would love to cycle in Asia or South America,” Mr Reed added.
“When we get home, we can start discussing that.”
