A woman on the primary school run was so drunk that she fell over injuring a child while carrying a baby, a court has heard.

When Aleksandra Pociecha, 28, arrived for the afternoon school pick-up time she was unsteady on her feet and smelt of alcohol.

Teachers at Catton Grove Primary School in Norwich were so alarmed by her behaviour that they called police, Norwich Magistrates’ Court was told.

Rima Bejum, prosecuting, said: “She fell over with the baby in her arms and landed on top of a young child causing them scraps and bruises."

After being arrested following the incident on July 20 a breath test recorded 101mg of alcohol - almost three times the legal drink drive limit.

“She accepted that an Audi A3 that was parked outside the school was hers and that she had the keys in her possession,” said Ms Bejum.

Speaking through a Polish interpreter, Pociecha, of George Pope Close, Norwich, pleaded guilty to being drunk in charge of a child and being in charge of a vehicle with an alcohol level above the limit.

Andrew Spence, mitigating, said she was “very ashamed” of her behaviour but that she had been struggling to cope.

“Her partner worked long hours at a car factory and she started to feel very isolated and lacking support,” he said.

“It got to the point where she was unable to cope and on this particular day, unfortunately, she bought a bottle of alcohol and drank it very quickly. It is not something she has ever done before.”

She is now seeking support including counselling, the court was told.

Magistrates gave her a 12 month conditional discharge but decided against banning her from driving, instead putting 10 points on her driving licence.
