Plans for a new wildlife lake with shepherd's huts have been given the go-ahead.

Russell Green has been given planning permission to create the 1.5-acre lake he has already begun digging at Stoke Ferry, near Downham Market.

West Norfolk Council has also agreed he can site four hand-made shepherd's huts on the site, off Bridge Road, for tourists.

A planning statement said: "The lake is being sympathetically created to enhance the landscape and provide a nature haven for birds and wildlife.

"In addition to the lake, we will provide rustic countryside accommodation for tourists looking for short breaks and weekend stays."

Mr Green said he is planting native trees and shrubs on the site to encourage species which are in decline, such as the turtle dove.

He adds: "The lake will offer fishing facilities to the local villagers and tourists, and the shepherd's huts will offer tranquil, rural accommodation to visitors and access to beauty spots and the nearby towns."

A planning officer's report said nine letters of support had been received from villagers.

"This proposal adjoins my property and the land has been an abandoned overgrown mess ever since I moved here 33 years ago," one said.

"It is lovely to see it finally being utilised for a project that will enhance the local area and promote use of local businesses."

Another added: "The lake is stunning and attracts all manner of insects and birds."

Two objections were also received, with one complaining Mr Green had started work on the site before submitting a planning application.

Stoke Ferry Parish Council said parking would need to be provided for anglers to prevent them from parking on Bridge Road.
