A high-speed crash left such a devastating scene that police were initially unable to see a man who was dead inside one of the cars, an inquest has heard.

Lee Gray died in January after rolling off the A1075 at Shipdham following a head-on collision which left his car "wrapped around a tree". He was 49.

An inquest into his death held in Norwich heard that his car, a Ford Focus, was so badly damaged that emergency services could not at first see he was inside.

Andrew Powell, a police officer who attended the scene, said: "The car was wrapped around the tree and we were unable to see inside."

Sgt Liam Brown added the car was "an absolute mess", describing "a path of destruction leading to the vehicle".

Emergency services, including firefighters and paramedics, were forced to cut Mr Gray out of the vehicle, but he had died in the impact.

The crash, which happened at around 8.40pm on January 13, saw Mr Gray's car enter the opposite carriageway into the path of an oncoming Kia Rio, driven by Sinead Batty.

Police investigations into the crash could find no conclusive explanation for how Mr Gray, who lived in Shipdham, lost control of his vehicle, but said there was nothing Miss Batty could do to avoid the impact.

The crash saw both cars spin, with Mr Gray's rolling off the road and into a tree.

Following his death, 136mg of alcohol was discovered in his system - almost twice the limit to drive - however pathologists said the exact amount could not be determined.

Jamie Hutchens, a forensic collision investigator for the police, said: "The most likely cause of the crash was a combination of speed and manner of Mr Gray's driving and possible alcohol consumption before."

Area coroner Samantha Goward concluded he had died as a result of a road traffic collision.
