A Norfolk brewery has scooped another award for one of its best beers.

Moon Gazer Ale, based at Norfolk Brewhouse in Hindringham, has been awarded champion Cask Pale Ale for its ‘Cheeky Jack’ IPA at the Society of Independent Brewers (Siba) awards.

It comes after the beer also won Camra’s (Campaign for Real Ale) champion cask beer of Norfolk for 2023.

The brewery is now set to represent the eastern region at the national finals in Liverpool in March next year.

Brewery owners husband-and-wife team David and Rachel Holliday said they are proud to have picked up another prestigious awards.

“It is very rare for the same beer to hold both titles in the same year, so we are extremely proud that the consistency and quality of Cheeky Jack has been recognised in this way by two very respected organisations,” David Holliday said.

“We are absolutely thrilled that our Moon Gazer Cheeky Jack has been named the overall champion pale ale in its category – one of the toughest and most competitive beer categories.

“We always knew it was good but to receive two accolades is great as it means that our peers agree with us.”

The beer was the subject of controversy earlier this year when the brewery opted to change the name of the award-winning ale after fears it could be percieved as racist.

The beer was previously called ‘White Face’ – named, like the brewery’s other beers Jigfoot, Pintail and Nibbler, after hares in a medieval poem called the Name of the Hare.

The American-style IPA was changed to ‘Cheeky Jack’, as jack rabbits are what hares are known as in the states.

The award was judged in a blind tasting by industry professionals and beer experts. The national competition covered eight regions and involved more than 1,000 brewers.

Moon Gazer also received bronze awards for their Nibbler and Scoundrel beers at the event, which was held at Elgood’s brewery, in Wisbech.
