A shop in the Broads is celebrating its 60th birthday by handing out free goody bags to 200 customers.

Lathams of Potter Heigham is hosting a range of activities over the weekend of September 23 and 24 - and on each day it will give freebies to its first 100 customers.

The bags will contain: Lathams special edition bottle openers, trolley token and pens, a home grown plant from one of QD's nurseries, as well as a variety of everyday products.

The shop, a Norfolk institution famous for its fishing tackle and supplies, was opened by Ken Latham in 1963.

When he retired in 1989, Lathams joined the Norfolk discount store groung QD.

The shop will mark six decades in business with a host of activities including free vintage open top bus tours, competitions and giveaways, food stalls, face painting, a toy tombola and music.

Nick Rubins, CEO of the QD Group, said: “Lathams has been a linchpin in Potter Heigham for 60 years and we are delighted to have played our part in keeping this Norfolk institution running successfully during this time.

"The store is very dear to us and, even today, we have strong connections to its founder – Ann Sharman, our head of supply chain at QD, is actually the daughter of Norman Sharman who sold Ken the land on which Lathams is built.

"Ken even gave Ann’s mum a lift to hospital when she was in labour with her," Mr Rubins said.

John Goldie, store manager at Lathams, said: “We’re very much looking forward to hosting this 60th birthday event which will give Lathams customers, new and old, the opportunity to celebrate with us and enjoy the history behind this jewel of the Norfolk Broads.

"It looks set to be an action-packed weekend with something for everyone to enjoy – do come along and join the fun.”
