Unsightly power and fibre optic cables could be buried on the approach to one of Norfolk's most picturesque beaches.

The National Trust needs to run a new pipeline from the toilets on Brancaster Beach to the nearest main sewer in the village half a mile away.

It says the work, which needs carrying out because an existing septic tank is near the end of its life, provides an opportunity to remove overhead lines which run along Beach Road.

In a letter requesting support from Brancaster Parish Council, the National Trust says: "We’ve been having discussions with BT OpenReach who have concluded that they would be interested in undergrounding their fibre optic connection in this area, and UK Power Networks were also interested in undergrounding their high voltage power line whilst the opportunity presented itself.

"This will have a positive impact on the area as it will remove the unsightly overhead lines, as well as remove the risk of bird strikes."

The parish council agreed to support the proposals.

The trust said a number of consents would be needed before it could carry out the work.
