Drivers will still face a few more weeks of pain on the A11, highways bosses have confirmed, despite both lanes having reopened after months of roadworks.

This week saw the southbound carriageway between Spooner Row and the Tuttles Interchange at Wymondham reopen.

It meant all four lanes are open - and the national speed limit restored - after work which began in May last year neared completion after a delay due to the weather.

The work has caused months of disruption and delays for drivers, with carriageways in both directions were reduced to single-lane contraflows and 40mph speed limit restrictions.

While the carriageways are now open, bosses at government company National Highways, which is responsible for the road, said there is still a need for some overnight closures before they can say 'job done'.

And they revealed that the cost of the project, which saw more than 10 miles of carriageway reconstructed, increased to £65m since the original £60m estimate in May last year.

Simon Amor, head of scheme delivery for National Highways in the East region, said: "We are thrilled to have reached this major milestone of two lanes running in both directions at national speed limit.

"We still have work to complete on the scheme before we can officially say ‘project complete’, but we wanted to ensure motorists felt the promised benefits of a smoother, safer and quieter road surface as soon as possible.

"The scheme will undoubtedly leave a positive impact on the region and I’d like to extend my thanks to the local community for their patience and understanding during construction."

As well as resurfacing the road, the project also included the installation of replacement kerbs, a refurbished drainage system, new safety barriers, road markings and new reflective cat's eyes.

The final, full, overnight closures of the road, between 8pm and 6am, before the project is complete are as follows:

Southbound from Thickthorn to Attleborough (August 29, September 7 to 11 and September 14/15).

Northbound from Attleborough to Thickthorn (August 30 to September 1 and September 4 to 6).
