A seal pup has died after it was put in a car alongside a dog despite warnings from a rescue charity.

Friends of Horsey Seals were informed of a lone seal pup on the beach at Sea Palling on Friday.

The charity told the caller to leave the animal on the beach but it was later wrapped in a coat and put into the back of a car.

Sally Butler from Friends of Horsey Seals told the BBC: "My colleagues at Marine and Wildlife Rescue received a telephone call at about 9.15pm on Friday saying there is a pup in difficulty on the beach.

"The advice was given to leave this pup alone, but unfortunately the advice wasn't listened to and the pup was actually picked up.

"I then got called out to go and collect the pup which was in someone's car along with a dog.

"The pup was in a reasonably good condition there was no sign of ulcers or lung worm but it was in severe shock.

"I took the pup home and unfortunately it died and I am quite certain the reason the pup died was because of the shock."
