Delays are expected on the A47 as further closures to a major bridge in Norfolk have been announced.

As work continues on the £7.5m redevelopment of Breydon Bridge on the River Yare, National Highways have notified of a series of closures.

They will take place on August 21, August 22, August 23 and August 29, and will see the bridge closed between 8pm to 6am.

The bridge will also close for two and a half weeks between September 15 and October 5 overnight.

Eastbound traffic will be diverted from the A47 at Trowse Newton before travelling southbound on the A146.

Traffic will then join the A143 at Gillingham before rejoining the A47 at Beccles Road and A47 interchange.

Westbound traffic will follow the same diversion but in reverse. 

The bridge's lifting system will be tested between 10am and 2.30pm between October 9 and October 12. Traffic lights will be in place while this happens.

Small boats will be able to pass under the bridge using the side spans.

Breydon Bridge first opened in 1985 and last year carried an average of 31,000 vehicles over the River Yare each day.

Work on the bridge is expected to be completed this winter.
