The weekend's high tides and strong winds led to about six metres of sand disappearing at Hemsby beach.

Hemsby Independent Lifeboat maintained the beach access and safeguarded vulnerable village residents as the Norfolk coast was lashed by heavy winds and rain on Saturday and Sunday.

The lifeboat crew installed temporary concrete blocks to protect the dunes in front of the Marrams' last remaining residence on the north side.

Hemsby Lifeboat's coxswain Daniel Hurd said around six metres of sand was lost from the village's coastline.

On Sunday, the crew worked from noon until 9pm to restore access to the beach by the gap and cleared away debris left over from the tidal surges.

Mr Hurd said: "All the beach work was completed last night.

"So it is all back to normal.

"But It was worse than we originally thought it was going to be.

"I am immensely proud of my crew and their great effort over the weekend."

Mr Hurd said there is still about half a day's work left to do, but the beach is open and accessible.

The restoration work comes as the independent lifeboat prepares for its annual summer fete, taking place on the weekend.

Starting at 4pm on Saturday, the lifeboat crew is throwing a foam party at the station with live music, a barbecue and a licensed bar. The party will continue until just before midnight.

On Sunday, the Lifeboat Day will provide fun for all the family.

The day kicks off at 10am and will feature displays from Hemsby Lifeboat, Gorleston Lifeboat and the RNLI Lifeguards.

There will also be a tombola, cakes, a grand draw raffle, arts and crafts, games, face painting and a bouncy castle.

The event will also provide entertainment from live music by the likes of Lee Statham, Billie Mac, and DJs. Refreshments will be served from the beer tent and barbecue.
