More than 60 new homes could be built in a Norfolk town if councillors agree to contribute almost £3m towards the scheme.

County councillors will be asked next week to agree to make the money available for the homes, aimed at people aged 55 and over, on the A149 King's Lynn Road, in Hunstanton.

Norfolk County Council is proposing to work with not-for-profit social landlord Places for People to develop the Independent Living scheme.

The homes - 11 two-bed and 50 one-bed apartments - would be offered as affordable housing for people who need extra care and support.

Alison Thomas, the Conservative-controlled council's cabinet member for adult social care, said: "We’re investing £29m in schemes like the one proposed at Hunstanton, because people tell us they want to be able to live in their own homes for as long as possible.

"Independent Living gives people the freedom of having their own home, combined with the peace of mind of having care and support on-site.

"This kind of housing can help give people the support they need to stay healthier for longer, preventing them from needing to move into a care home as they get older, and helping them to continue living in their communities."

The project will be discussed when the cabinet meets on Monday (August 7).

The scheme secured planning permission in April, with the homes among 160 properties due to be built beside the coast road on the outskirts of Hunstanton.

The wider complex will include 60 further homes and 39 'care ready' bungalows.

Norfolk County Council has already agreed funding for three other schemes in Fakenham, Acle and Harleston.

Meadow Walk, in Fakenham and Swallowtail Place, in Acle have already opened.

Work on the Harleston scheme is due to start later this year.

Norfolk County Council analysis has shown the county needs to build 2,842 independent living units by 2028 to cater for the needs of people in Norfolk.
