Hundreds of homes have been left without power as high winds batter the county.

It follows a Met Office warning in place today (July 15) for strong winds.

Nearly 600 homes in the Dereham area are currently without power amid gusts as high as 46mph recorded in mid and west Norfolk.

Engineers are on their way and it is hoped it will be fixed by 5pm.

Homes in King's Lynn and in villages to the south and east of the town are also affected, with as many as 200 homes currently without power.

To the south, about 200 homes have also been affected in Diss and the surrounding villages.

More than 350 homes in Attleborough are also facing power cuts which are expected to be restored by 9pm.

UK Power Network has said it is experiencing a high level of calls and messages at this time amid the power cuts.

The weather warning is in place until midnight tonight and there is a chance the winds could cause damage to buildings and trees.

The forecasted gales forced the cancellation of a number of events over the weekend.

It is expected to ease into the evening and on Sunday it will be much less windy with sunny spells and showers, according to the Met Office.

The turbulent weather follows a record-breaking June, which was the hottest on record since 1850.
