A pier in Norfolk has been named one of the nation's best in a newly-released list.

A round-up by The Sunday Times of seven of the best British piers, by travel writer Chris Haslam, includes Cromer Pier.

Cromer Pier is one of three in Norfolk, with the other two Britannia and Wellington in Great Yarmouth, and 61 remain in Britain today.

Many were built in the 19th century as somewhere for pleasure boats to dock for seaside holidays, especially in coastal towns not yet connected by rail.

It was later realised that they could be monetised with a whole host of attractions and in their heyday there were more than 100.

The present structure of Cromer Pier was completed in 1901 and it is 152 metres long.

The Sunday Times said: "The Cromer lifeboat launches off the end, sending up a terrific splash as it hits the sea, but the main attraction is the 510-seat Pavilion Theatre, home of the world’s last remaining, full-season end-of-the-pier show."

Moving down the coast, Southwold in Suffolk also features in the list.
