A new car park could be opening in a historic village which boasts the ruins of both a castle and priory.

A two-acre field to the west of Priory Road in Castle Acre, near swaffham, could be used to provide visitors to its Norman attractions with an alternative to parking in the centre of the village.

Castle Acre Parish Council says in its planning application: "Castle Acre's adopted neighbourhood plan calls for a dedicated seasonal visitor car park to draw incoming motorists away from the centre of the village and to reduce the visual dominance and physical impact of parking in the village centre.

"Castle Acre Parish Council is renting Holkham's grass field off Priory Lane on a 20 year lease. The field is within the Conservation Area.

"To protect the grass surface from damage by up to 40 parked cars per day during the high tourist season, CAPC plans to install a tile system, supplied by Gridforce - made of 100pc recycled low-density polyethylene plastic, frost and UV radiation proof.

"It will provide a stable, eco-friendly reinforcement laid within the surface grass."
