Emergency services have been hit by a technical fault that had prevented people from making 999 calls.

The issue was first reported just before 9am this morning and it  affected 'blue light' services across the country.

Calls were back in operation after 10am this morning.

BT, which manages the 999 system, has reported that a "system failure" caused the problems.

A spokesman for the telecoms giant said: “Early this morning we experienced a problem with the 999 service.

“The situation is fast-moving as we fix the problem and our backup platform is now working – so people should call 999 as usual.

“We will provide updates as the issue is resolved.”

The Norfolk Fire Service and Norfolk police have said that while 999 calls should be working, if you can't get through call 101 and ask for the service you need.

The East of England Ambulance Service also said its 999 call system was back in operation but urged people to only call the number in an emergency.

It is currently not known what has caused the technical fault or when the issue will be resolved.
