Campaigners fighting to stop one of Norfolk's tips being axed have urged people against the closure to send a strong message to council leaders that it should be saved.

The closure of Mayton Wood Recycling Centre, near Coltishall, is proposed by Norfolk County Council as part of its need to make £60m of cuts and savings in the coming year.

Conservative-run County Hall put the closure forward late in the planning for its February budget, having scrapped controversial plans to save £200,000 by shutting all recycling centres on Wednesdays.

Consultation over the closure plan, at norfolk.citizenspace.com/environment-transport-and-development/mayton-wood, comes to a close on Monday (June 26).

But more than a thousand people have signed petitions against the closure, including one set up by Liberal Democrat councillors.

Dan Roper, Liberal Democrat county councillor, said he used the tip at the weekend in preference to the Norwich North recycling centre, off the Northern Distributor Road.

And he urged people to have their say in the consultation, to make clear how valued the Mayton Wood centre is.

Mr Roper, who represents Hevingham and Spixworth, said: "Mayton Wood is highly valued by local residents. It is a very well-run centre with incredibly helpful staff.

"We should not be reducing recycling capacity at this time. This is a lose-lose situation, as any financial savings will probably be offset by an increase in waste going into people's general waste bins and increases in costs through fly-tipping."

Eric Vardy, the council's cabinet member for environment and waste, said: "We’re asking for your thoughts on our approach, and the impact closing Mayton Wood could have on you and how you recycle. Understanding the impact on residents will help shape our plans."

Council officers previously said there had been a "significant drop" of just over a third in people using Mayton Wood since Norwich North opened in 2021.

The council said if Mayton Wood is shut, people could use Norwich North or Worstead Recycling Centre.
