New parking restrictions in two popular coastal villages won't be going live this year.

Brancaster Parish Council has agreed to fund double yellow lines and new signs in areas of Brancaster and Brancaster Staithe which become congested in summer.

Double yellow lines will be placed along parts of the main A149 through both villages, while parking on London Road in Brancaster will be for residents only.

The measures, which would come into force during July and August, will cost an estimated £20,000 - half of which may be covered by grants.

Parish council chair Tom de Winton said: "We won't be getting it this summer because it has to go through the full consultation process and the county council runs that.

"It's generally agreed that we need to have some sort of traffic management in the village, especially during July and August.

"The fire last summer emphasised the need to keep our main route open."

A major fire tore through the village during last July's heatwave, destroying homes, vehicles and gardens.

Visitors to Brancaster and Brancaster Staithe soared during the Covid staycation boom.

But cars clogged up roads and parked on verges around the villages.

Plans for two temporary overflow car parks fell through earlier this year.

Brancaster Parish Council carried out a parking survey in 2021. It said it was clear most people wanted restrictions.

But of 69 people who took part in a second survey last year, around a third said they did not want double yellow lines.

Feelings have also been running high over moves to reduce the speed limit on the main A149 from 60 to 40mph on both approaches to the villages.

But the plans have now been scrapped after an outcry from communities along the route.

Nearby Hunstanton Town Council said if the changes had gone ahead, it would have been quicker to drive to London from the town than Cromer.
