Take a break while on a walk this summer by heading to one of these Norfolk pub gardens along scenic routes.

1. The Red Lion Bishopgate, Norwich

Take a walk along the River Wensum and stroll past landmarks such as Norwich Cathedral, Pull's Ferry and Cow Tower.

Start at St Georges Street Bridge, by the Playhouse, and follow the riverside path to Norwich Station, stopping off at The Red Lion for a pint overlooking the water, with Norfolk Paddle Boards also based there.

2. The Jolly Sailors, Brancaster

Muddy boots and sandy paws are welcome at this award-winning family pub on the coast and you can enjoy real ales, stonebaked pizzas and much more in its spacious garden. 

It is the perfect place to visit for a drink or meal after exploring the Brancaster Estate, which is managed by the National Trust, with its harbour and golden sand beach.

3. The Dun Cow, Salthouse 

The Salthouse Circular Walk spans a refreshing 5.5 miles and it starts and ends at The Dun Cow, which overlooks the salt marshes and boasts a huge garden. 

The route, available to view in full online, goes past the heathland and gorse around Bard Hill where you will find the remains of a WWII radar station.

The pub has also just been added to The Good Food Guide 2023 as a 'local gem'.

4. Nelson Head, Horsey 

The Nelson Head pub, which was recently a filming location for the Paramount+ series The Chemistry of Death, has a giant beer garden in tranquil surroundings.

It is the perfect pitstop when exploring the likes of Horsey Gap to the north, with its long sandy beach and seal colony, and Horsey Windpump and Mere to the south, with various circular routes available to view online.

5. The Bell, Cawston 

This 17th-century pub is located in the heart of the Norfolk countryside and its lunch menu ranges from burgers, baps and hot dogs to seafood platters, with the option to enjoy it in the beer garden. 

The Cawston Circular Walk is one of the route options and it takes around two-and-a-half hours to complete, with a loop around from Reepham to Cawston along a section of the historic Marriott's Way.
