UK's shortest double yellow lines in North Walsham

Trev Hollett snapped a picture of Market Street in North Walsham that features just 18 inches of double yellow lines. 

Adorned on a manhole cover, the rest of the road is without the markings, which prompted Mr Hollett to ask in a social media post if they are the shortest double yellow lines in the country.

The post created much speculation from commenters, with some quick to joke that motorists could park anywhere on the road so long as they're not covering the manhole cover.

But it was quickly revealed that the road had recently been resurfaced and the lines never repainted, with the change causing confusion for drivers who were unsure whether restrictions were still in place.

Lucy Shires, councillor for North Walsham East, said: "I have raised the issue with the council and highways department after people have been caught out with parking charges.

"If North Walsham really is home to the country's shortest double yellow line we would obviously be incredibly proud.

"However, I think it's simply a case of mistaken road markings that have not been rectified yet."

He added: "These are clearly signposted at the entrance to the road and along its length.

"Where parking restrictions are in force, this information is displayed to road users in a number of ways, including regular signs along affected streets, and we would also urge all road users to please respect the restrictions displayed."
