A new lido could be built in a Norfolk resort town 50 years after it lost its much-loved seafront swimming pool.

Consultants have been called in to assess the feasibility of building a marine lake on the seafront at Hunstanton.

The Hunstanton Advisory Group, which has been set up to champion projects in the town, has commissioned environmental and economic studies to test the waters.

Advisory group chair Charles le Strange Meakin said: "Discussions are at a very early stage.

"We're very excited about the prospect of restoring something like the lido in town but it's very early days regarding the feasibility study and we'll keep people informed as things progress."

A seafront lido was once a popular summer attraction in the resort, with its slides and diving boards.

Generations of visitors and locals took a dip in the Blue Lagoon's waters after it was built in 1927.

But the plug was pulled in 1967 to make way for a new indoor leisure dome.

After the original project stalled amid a shake-up of local government, the site eventually became home to the Oasis Leisure Centre, which opened in 1984.

Now that too is nearing the end of its lifespan. But an application for £20m in government levelling-up funding to replace it was turned down.

Proposals for a so-called marine lake on the seafront were included in a regeneration masterplan for Hunstanton published in 2009.

It included building a viewing platform at the pier building and new restaurants and cafes along the prom.

The lake idea lived on after design guru Wayne Hemingway was called in to refresh the proposals in 2019.
