A shop owner has expressed his exasperation at "constant" roadworks and claims his trade drops "up to 40pc" each time the engineers arrive.

Anglian Water closed The Street, in Garboldisham, this morning (May 19) for a one-day repair but due to "technical issues" it may not reopen until Thursday, May 25.

Garboldisham Post Office and General Stores is now only accessible from the A1066, with signs reported to be in place around seven miles away to say the road is closed, but not where the closure is.

Robbie Starling has owned the shop for 10 years and said that the roadworks have impacted business significantly.

"It's constant," he said. "The crossroads here are closed at the drop of a hat with no warning.

"We just looked out the window this morning and they were closing the road.

"We lose 30pc to 40pc of takings every time.

"The whole village has been coming in saying they can't believe it is shut again.

"There is not a lot we can do without warning. I would have cut down on milk and bread to avoid waste, as most of it is still sat here."

Anglian Water has said the work was due to be completed in one day but due to "technical issues" the team has been delayed.

A spokeswoman for the water company said: “This job was booked in to complete all in one day.

"The repair has been completed but when our reinstatement team attended they had technical issues with their side of the work due to overhead cables so this potentially could push the timescales back a little.

"We are committed to concluding works as fast and as safely as possible and are of course very sorry for any disruption caused.”
