Elections will have to be run again in three Norfolk villages, because not enough people stood for their parish councils.

They include second homes hotspot Burnham Overy Staithe, near Wells, where just two people stood at the May 4 elections, leaving five of its seven seats vacant.

Parish clerk Sarah Raven said a number of long-serving councillors had stood down at the election, including one who had been on the council for more than 30 years.

She said she had received "a flurry of calls" from people who were interested in standing since nominations opened for the second ballot, adding: "I think we'll be fine, we should hopefully be able to fill our five."

A new election is also needed in Northwold, near Downham Market, where just one person stood on May 4, leaving eight of its nine seats vacant.

Its website says: "What matters in your local area? Is it the state of the local park, the need for more activities for young people, improving services for older people, making roads safer or ensuring local businesses can thrive?

"Whatever needs changing, you could be just the person to change it by becoming a local councillor."

Parish clerk Pauline Andre said two councillors had retired, while others did not stand again because of other commitments.

She added she was confident enough people would come forward to fill the vacancies.

And there will also have to be a re-run in Houghton, near King's Lynn, where no-one stood on May 4, leaving all of its five seats vacant.

The parish covers an area of under three square miles and has a population of less than 100.

Parish clerk Edward Getley declined to comment.

Nominations will close at 4pm on Thursday, May 25. As long as enough candidates are nominated, elections will be held on Thursday, June 22.

Polling Stations will open from 7.00am to 10.00pm.
