A care home which saw residents withdrawn by County Hall was not protecting them from harm, a damning report has revealed.

The Care Quality Commission has published results of its latest inspection of The Mount care home in Aylsham - in which it rated the home as inadequate across the board.

The report shows residents were given poor care which did not protect their dignity or protect them from harm.

It comes a month after Norfolk County Council confirmed that it had withdrawn more than a dozen of its residents from the home amid its own concerns.

Now, full details of the home's failings have been revealed by the Care Quality Commission - which visited the home after being alerted by County Hall.

The report states inspectors identified "breaches in relation to protecting people's privacy and dignity".

Among the issues highlighted were:

  • Residents witnessed choking on food
  • Residents at serious risk of falls expected to use stairs as the site's life had been broken "for a number of months"
  • Curtains between bedrooms not meeting, meaning residents could clearly been seen from outside

The home had previously been rated as good by the CQC, but a subsequent inspection was held after declining standards were highlighted by the county council.

The inspection adds: "The quality of care provided at The Mount care home was poor.

"People were not being protected from risks of abuse and harm, due to the poor conditions and cleanliness of the care environment and a lack of risk management and oversight in place by the provider.

"People were not supported to lead meaningful lives or be part of their local community."

The home is a single-sex facility for men only and largely cares for residents aged 65 and over with mental health support needs.

Sunrise care homes, which also runs The Orchards home in Bradwell, has been approached for comment.
