North Walsham Snippers salon to close as owner retires

Snippers Artistic Hairdressing, in Grammar School Road, North Walsham, is closing its doors on May 31.

Owner Shaun Marshall, 64, opened his first salon in Cromer when he was 20 years old before later moving to North Walsham.

Ahead of retiring next month, Mr Marshall thanked his “loyal” clients and team of hairdressers, who he said are the reason for the salon’s success.

“We’ve been so successful over the years,” he said.

“I don’t really want to retire because it’s my passion – I love it. I’m still too young in my head to give it up.

“It’s sad to be closing but it had to happen at some point.

“We’ve gone from strength to strength and I’m very grateful for the reputation we’ve built up over the years and everything we’ve achieved together.

“I couldn’t have done it on my own.”

Mr Marshall trained at Kings Lynn Technical College before opening his first salon in Cromer in the early 1980s.

He received training at Toni and Guy and Vidal Sassoon in London’s West End.

After nine years in Cromer, he opened his second salon in North Walsham. 

“I was so lucky and blessed to get the training I received,” he said.

“It was the foundation of me and made me passionate about what I do, which I’ve tried to pass on.”

He said alongside retiring one of the reasons for closing was because he struggled to recruit skilled members of staff after the pandemic.

Snippers currently employs four part-time hairdressers.

“It’s the same in every industry today: everyone is looking for skilled people, who seem to have vanished,” he said.

“They must be passionate and skilled. There are people out there, but they’re hard to find.”
