As the EDP Business Awards 2023 open for entries, we find out more about the Environmental and Sustainability Award, sponsored by Norse Group.

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in all aspects of our lives, including the way that we work and run our businesses.

As new net zero targets and incentives are introduced on a local and national level, an environmental strategy is important for every business to have, and the Environment & Sustainability Award aims to celebrate local firms that keep their green initiatives at the core of everything they do.

“Being environmentally friendly not only makes an important contribution to society, but can improve the business, contributing to growth and long-term success,” said Justin Galliford, CEO of Norse Group, which is sponsoring the category.

“Having clear policies relating to the environment and sustainability lays the foundation for achieving this, and allows companies to set achievable goals.” Mr Galliford explained how implementing sustainable practices can also deliver real benefits for businesses.

“As well as contributing to the planet’s survival, sustainable practices can bring tangible business benefits in reducing fuel and energy costs; in winning new clients, who are themselves becoming more demanding in requiring suppliers to meet environmental targets; and in attracting employees who demand high standards from their employers.”

As a judge for this category, Mr Galliford is keen to support local businesses as well as promote the importance of sustainability and protecting the environment. But with so many firms working to improve and shout about their green credentials, what does he think will help entrants stand out from the crowd?

“We are looking for a business that understands the importance of committing to environmental sustainability and social value,” he explained. “It is vital that organisations show commitment to protecting the environment.

“A clear demonstration of innovation in the approach to sustainability, embracing new technology and methodology will help entrants to stand out.”

The deadline for entries to the EDP Business Awards is July 16. To enter the Environmental and Sustainability Award category, please visit the website.
