Four new homes are set to built on an overgrown farmyard in a Norfolk village's conservation area.

Fountain Construction has been given planning permission to develop land off Pinfold Road in Upwell, near Downham Market.

It said in a planning statement it wanted to build on a parcel of land on the east of the road which has been allocated for residential development.

It added it currently contains dilapidated agricultural buildings and an overgrown yard.

"These buildings are in various states of repair and their removal and replacement with new dwellings will enhance the conservation area," it said.

Two of the homes will be three-bedroom bungalows and two will be two-storey four-bedroom houses, all with garages.

Upwell Parish Council supported the application.

West Norfolk council's conservation team said: "Whilst these dwellings appear to have a large footprint for the site, they are an improvement on the previous scheme and do bear some form of relationship to the adjacent properties.

"Hard and soft landscaping to the front of the dwellings should also be carefully considered so as not to cause harm to the setting or character of the conservation area."
