Plans have been revealed for the final stage of a major town regeneration - after previous designs were thrown out after being labelled "ugly" and likened to designs from the Soviet Union.

Freebridge Community Housing has invested £20m into transforming Hillington Square, in King's Lynn.

It began the award-winning revamp more than 10 years ago, after bringing in design guru Wayne Hemingway to help draw up a blueprint.

After modernising four blocks on the estate, near the Ouse waterfront, Freebridge is submitting plans for 66 further homes and community spaces.

They replace earlier proposals for the estate thrown out by West Norfolk council after the design was labelled "ugly" and "Soviet communist".

The revised plans involve completing the refurbishment of Ladysmith, Vicarage and Farrow House and the redevelopment of the residential blocks known as Aitken, Chestnut and Norris House - which will provide a mixture of one, two and three bedroomed homes.

A Freebridge spokesman said: “This marks the final stage of one of our flagship developments and we’re very proud of the work we’ve done so far over a number of years.

“We are very grateful for the local community’s contribution to the consultation on final phase."
