Police are increasing the number of patrols by unmarked cars on Norfolk roads this week, as part of a campaign to improve safety for bikes and motorcycles.

The initiative is timed to coincide with the arrival of spring weather and longer evenings, which tend to bring more cyclists and motorcyclists onto the roads.

According to data from Highways England, the peak months for motorcyclist collisions are April and September.

Whilst motorcyclists make up only 1pc of the motoring population they are 16 times more likely to be injured in a serious or fatal collision.

An increased number of unmarked vehicles will be patrolling areas where higher numbers of two-wheel collisions have been recorded.

Police say they hope the campaign will provide an opportunity to educate all road users about how they can improve their driver behaviour.

Uniformed officers will also be engaging with riders about the ways in which they can best protect themselves from threats.

The "Two Wheel" campaign is being led by the National Police Chief’s Council and will run until April 23.
