A teenager jointly accused of an attack that left a man with life-threatening brain injuries has claimed he has no recollection of the incident.
Codie Marjoram, 19, is on trial with Achilles Lawrence Gate’te, 19, accused of “joint enterprise” following a series of violent incidents in Norwich’s nightclub district in the early hours of March 19 last year.
David Constant, the victim of one encounter, had to have part of his skull removed to save his life after being punched to the ground in St Vedast Street, just off Prince of Wales Road.
Under cross examination, Marjoram told a jury at Norwich Crown Court that he had no recollection of either that attack or an earlier violent confrontation with a group that included Mr Constant.
Will Carter, prosecuting, asked whether he threw punches during the attack including one that floored a second man.
“I cannot recall,” replied Marjoram.
He told the court he felt he and Gate’te had been “victims” because they had been outnumbered during the two aggressive confrontations.
Asked by Mr Carter whether he felt sorry for the serious injuries Mr Constant had suffered, he said: “David never deserved what he got”.
The trial has previously heard that the pair were seen laughing and celebrating as they ran away down Rose Lane.
The jury has also heard that during the night Gate’te had also threatened to “smash up” a kebab shop worker and “smack the s***” out of a female nightclub cloakroom attendant.
Asked if he would describe Gate’te as having been “really pumped up”, Marjoram replied: “No, I wouldn't say that”.
Gate'te, of Cunningham Road, Norwich, denies causing grievous bodily harm, an offence of inflicting grievous bodily harm and assault by beating.
Marjoram, of Calthorpe Road, Norwich, has denied grievous bodily harm and assaulting three others.
The trial continues.
