Wildlife teams from RSCPA East Winch, near King's Lynn, had just released a group of nine seals that had recovered from similar injuries when they were alerted to the incident on Friday (April 7).

Named Kanga, the young seal is currently receiving treatment for the "nasty" wound which has left it with deep lacerations.

Centre Manager Evangelos Achilleos said: "We were really excited this morning after releasing nine recovered seals but within the hour this has happened.

"It has been very emotional. We're going to remove the netting and we're going to need lots of salt because this is a very nasty wound."

The incident comes after the RSPCA appealed for people to go litter picking amid the organisation helping thousands of animals each year that have been harmed due to litter.

RSPCA scientific officer Evie Button said: “Litter is one of the biggest hazards our wildlife faces today.

"It is a problem on all of our doorsteps - from city centres to the countryside and beaches - so all of us can do something to help by getting involved in the Great British Spring Clean and disposing of dangerous items."
