The son of a man whose friend was electrocuted while they were on holiday in India is desperate to help get his father home following the tragedy.

Harry Linder, who works at Coldham Hall Tavern in Surlingham where his dad, David, is the landlord, says he is working to get him home after the "difficult time".

David was on holiday with his friend Ivan Brown in Dalhousie in the foothills of the Himalayas, when the latter went to take a photo of the Pir Panjal Range.

It is thought Mr Brown fell backwards while trying to take the picture and grabbed a wire in an attempt to stabilise himself.

The wire was live and electrocuted him, with police now investigating the death of the 71-year-old on Sunday, April 2, who used to be the landlord of Norwich pubs including the Murderers.

Harry said: "It is certainly a difficult time for us.

"Our focus is solely on getting our father back home safely as fast as possible."

He did not wish to comment further out of respect for Mr Brown's family and friends.

Mr Brown's daughter, Natalie Dawson, said her father's death had left "a massive hole in everyone's life" and added he had been having a "fantastic time" on his trip.

She said: "He was a very well-known character around Norwich and loved by many.

"He helped many people in so many ways. It's a great loss to the whole of Norwich and as a family we are all distraught and devastated.

"And this should never have happened; he should be coming home to us. We loved him dearly.

"The wire shouldn't have been live and it has already been reported twice they said it was dangerous and there were no signs."

Mr Brown's death was witnessed by a number of other tourists as the site is a popular area to take a snap of the mountain range.

Eastern Daily Press:

One man who lives in the village but did not wish to be named confirmed the wire had already been reported after near misses.

A hotelier in the village said the incident had "saddened" the area where he said major incidents were uncommon.

He said: "It was very sad to hear what happened.

"Dalhousie is quite a small place and it really is a big thing to happen here.

"Everyone has been talking about it."

Dalhousie is a hill station based across five hills 6,460ft above sea level in the foothills of the Himalayas, with a population of about 7,000 people.

The town was named after the Earl of Dalhousie who established the area as a summer retreat during his time as British governor general in India.

Following the incident a Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in India and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Mr Brown is best known as the former landlord of the Murderers pub in Timberhill and also once owned The Eagle in Newmarket Road with Nigel Booty and The Bull at Hellesdon.

Mrs Dawson said her father's hobbies were fishing and golf and added that travelling was a "huge passion" of his saying he "loved anything adventurous".

His close friend Roger Cawdron, landlord of the Ribs of Beef in Magdalen Street, said Ivan would be greatly missed.

He said: "Ivan was a dear friend of mine, he was certainly a character.

"He will be very sadly missed by all of his friends and family, myself included."
