Romance writer Louise Allen wins readers' novel award

The romance writer from north Norfolk is celebrating after scooping a prestigious literary accolade for her latest book. 

Mrs Allen lives on the coast with her husband in Cley-next-the-Sea, near Sheringham, with a garden she describes as “one that fights back”.

As well as her historical romances, she has also written several non-fiction history titles and almost all are set in the years spanning Jane Austen's lifetime. 

Inspired by this period of history “on the threshold of the modern world”, she said she finds it endlessly fascinating.  

Now she has been rewarded for her efforts at the Romantic Novelists’ Association’s (RNA) annual Romantic Novel Awards 2023, taking home the Shorter Romantic Novel Award.

She said: “I was thrilled to be shortlisted for an RNA and I’m beyond delighted to have won in my category. 

“The community of writers that make up the RNA create books that stir emotions, celebrate life, and provide a wonderful dose of positivity in a world that sorely needs it.  

“It is an honour to be part of that community and to have received this award.”

Mrs Allen won the award with her book, The Earl's Mysterious Lady.  

A Mills & Boon novel, it tells the story of young Viola who ran away, leaving Guy Thurlow, the Earl of Easton, at the altar, only to return as the now unknown Cressida Williams. 

When she is not writing or battling the garden, Mrs Allen can be found traveling and collecting original Regency prints. 

Bestselling Norfolk author Heidi Swain also recently won an RNA award at this year’s ceremony held in London on March 6. Previous winners include Santa Montefiore, Joe Heap, Julie Cohen and Milly Johnson.
