Norfolk weather : 50mph winds and more snow forecast

A gust of 51mph was reported at Weybourne in north Norfolk and winds have been gushing over the top of the dunes as the spring tide ate away more material from Hemsby Gap overnight.

The strong winds come after a week of snow flurriesin Norfolk as temperatures dropped.

The spring tide is due to peak at Hemsbyat 10.30am and temporary accommodation has been found for people living in three homes at risk on the cliff edge.

A spokesman from the Met Office said: "It is a blustery start to Friday for Norfolk, with wind gusts of 51mph recorded at coasts such as Weybourne and 36mph further inland at Marham.

"This is due to the area of low pressure that has been pushing across the UK over the past couple of days. It is also bringing the current rain and snow across the county.

"Throughout the day, this low pressure will begin to clear away to the east and winds will ease and the rain will gradually clear.

"A scattering of wintry showers are still possible in the afternoon, but it will generally become drier.

"Saturday will be a largely fine and dry day with light winds, if rather cold after a frosty start.

"Further rain and sleet will arrive for the evening and then move through overnight, clearing by Sunday morning.

"The breeze will also pick up again during the night, but won’t be as strong as Friday morning.

A Met Office Level 3 cold weather alert for most of the country is in place until 9am on Monday, March 13.
